Concussion and Vestibular Rehab

Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy is expanding our services to provide comprehensive concussion and vestibular rehabilitation services. We are partnering with Impact Applications, which provides us with educational resources, training, and standardized testing; that includes normative data and an evidence-based approach in assisting with the diagnoses of both concussion and vestibular patients. These tools not only help with proper diagnosis, but also help with directing treatment approach to optimize results.
Baseline Testing:
Neurocognitive testing performed prior to play. The athlete’s test is registered with Impact Testing, which follows the individual. Testing is recommended annually.
Post Injury Impact Quick Test:
After a suspected concussion the patient performs the short form neurocognitive test to help confirm diagnosis. If the patient has not taken the baseline testing their scores are compared with normative data. If the testing shows abnormalities a more comprehensive test is performed. It also gives support for removal from activity decisions easy and based on best current research.
Treatment Plan:
The patient’s treatment plan is based on several clinical tests that are performed to place them in a clinical trajectory. These tests include clinical interview, symptom profile, neurocognitive testing, vestibular-ocular motor screen (VOMS), balance error scoring system (BESS), BPPV testing and a cervical screen.
Based on this testing we can assist in making informed decisions about return to activity, progress, vestibular rehab treatment, and medication selection (i.e. vestibular migraine, vertigo, anxiety). This testing will also help with making appropriate referrals to Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Ophthalmologists, Neuro-Ophthalmologists, Psychologists, etc.
